Ever get frustrated when trying to share the gospel with someone. Sometimes no matter how simple we make it, they just don’t seem to get it. We are going to look at some of the Biblical reasons why, so maybe instead of getting frustrated when this happens, we can learn to better deal with the lost.

1. Salvation is of God, not of man.

The lost world doesn’t quite know what to do with someone who would get up and declare the scriptures…  To them it is foolishness.

1 Corinthians 1:18  For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of God.

1 Corinthians 1:27  But God hath chosen the foolish things of the world to confound the wise; and God hath chosen the weak things of the world to confound the things which are mighty;

2. The Lost are Not Spiritually Discerned ( They CAN’T get it! )

1 Corinthians 2:14  But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are        foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.

  • It is the Holy Spirit through the Word of God that the world can understand salvation.
  • NEVER Argue Scripture! (Where is their final authority!)
  • The More time you spend arguing the less time you have to talk to someone else about Jesus. (They have Moses and the Prophets!)

Romans 10:17   So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.

1 John 5:13   These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God.

3.   Religion has twisted the simple truth of the Gospel.

Religion tries to breach the gap between God & Man.

If you take a man who is truly tired of the consequences of his sin, he’s not looking for something close.  He’s looking for something as far from where he is as possible.

If I’m filthy dirty I don’t want to wash up with a rag, I want a shower with soap!

Remember that God’s law is written in the hearts of man (everyone believes in God at a funeral) There is that inside him that says that God is pure and Holy.  When a man gets saved that is what he will go looking for.

4.  God has not been taught in the home

2 Tim. 3:15  And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus.

Deuteronomy 6:2  That thou mightest fear the Lord thy God, to keep all his statutes and his commandments, which I command thee, thou, and thy son, and thy son’s son, all the days of thy life; and that thy days may be prolonged.

Deuteronomy 6:6-9  And these words, which I command thee this day, shall be in thine heart: And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up. And thou shalt bind them for a sign upon thine hand, and they shall be as frontlets between thine eyes. And thou shalt write them upon the posts of thy house, and on thy gates.

Remember that this world has gone through two generations now where the Word of God has not been taught in the homes.  Therefore God isn’t real to them.  If they haven’t seen God work in their parents life then they have no understanding of God.
Do your kids enjoy church?

5.   So how do we deal with a lost person.

Realize that it is not US that gets them saved.

Romans 1:16  For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.

Become the window by which one can view the cross, not the door that blocks the view.

Know that it is more than developing a personal relationship with Jesus, it’s about getting saved!

Have a right Motivation (why are you telling someone about Jesus?) Who gets the credit?

1 Corinthians 3:5-10  Who then is Paul, and who is Apollos, but ministers by whom ye believed, even as the Lord gave to every man? I have planted, Apollos watered; but God gave the increase. So then neither is he that planteth any thing, neither he that watereth; but God that giveth the increase. Now he that planteth and he that watereth are one: and every man shall receive his own reward according to his own labour. For we are labourers together with God: ye are God’s husbandry, ye are God’s building. According to the grace of God which is given unto me, as a wise masterbuilder, I have laid the foundation, and another buildeth thereon. But let every man take heed how he buildeth thereupon.

Bible, Bible, Bible!  KEEP THE FOCUS ON JESUS!

It is important that we share what God has done for us, to have a clean testimony, but our desire needs to be that God get the Glory.

Enjoy Being a Christian! It’s Contagious!

We cannot get saved for them.  Our job is to go into the darkness where the lost are, take them by the hand and walk them to the light switch.  It’s up to them to turn on the switch.

Luke 23:42-43 And he said unto Jesus, Lord, remember me when thou comest into thy kingdom. And Jesus said unto him, Verily I say unto thee, To day shalt thou be with me in paradise.

What you do defines you more than what you say…

Matthew 26:6-13 Now when Jesus was in Bethany, in the house of Simon the leper, There came unto him a woman having an alabaster box of very precious ointment, and poured it on his head, as he sat at meat. But when his disciples saw it, they had indignation, saying, To what purpose is this waste? For this ointment might have been sold for much, and given to the poor. When Jesus understood it, he said unto them, Why trouble ye the woman? for she hath wrought a good work upon me. For ye have the poor always with you; but me ye have not always. For in that she hath poured this ointment on my body, she did it for my burial.  Verily I say unto you, Wheresoever this gospel shall be preached in the whole world, there shall also this, that this woman hath done, be told for a memorial of her.

Our daily trials are not in vain.

2 Corinthians 4:15-18 For all things are for your sakes, that the abundant grace might through the thanksgiving of many redound to the glory of God. For which cause we faint not; but though our outward man perish, yet the inward man is renewed day by day. For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, worketh for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory; While we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen: for the things which are seen are temporal; but the things which are not seen are eternal.

So what should our desire be?

Romans 12:9-18 Let love be without dissimulation. Abhor that which is evil; cleave to that which is good. Be kindly affectioned one to another with brotherly love; in honour preferring one another; Not slothful in business; fervent in spirit; serving the Lord; Rejoicing in hope; patient in tribulation; continuing instant in prayer; Distributing to the necessity of saints; given to hospitality. Bless them which persecute you: bless, and curse not. Rejoice with them that do rejoice, and weep with them that weep. Be of the same mind one toward another. Mind not high things, but condescend to men of low estate. Be not wise in your own conceits. Recompense to no man evil for evil. Provide things honest in the sight of all men. If it be possible, as much as lieth in you, live peaceably with all men.

James 2:17-18 Even so faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone. Yea, a man may say, Thou hast faith, and I have works: shew me thy faith without thy works, and I will shew thee my faith by my works.

Luke 23:42-43 And he said unto Jesus, Lord, remember me when thou comest into thy kingdom. And Jesus said unto him, Verily I say unto thee, To day shalt thou be with me in paradise.

When our life is recalled by our children, how will you be remembered?

For what we’ve accomplished in our own power?
Or for the things God’s accomplished through us?

The thief on the cross reflected on a life of sin at the end… realized he had no legacy, no name, no honor to leave behind. With humility he looked to Jesus and said… remember me.

God  remembered you…

2 Peter 3:9b….. not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.

John 3:16-17  For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.

Don’t wait till the last like the thief did…

Choose life more abundantly… start living for Christ and make memories that will last for all eternity.

Sing Take My Life And Let It Be,  Let this be your song.. God take my life and use it for YOUR Glory!

Genesis 35:3 And let us arise, and go up to Bethel; and I will make there an altar unto God, who answered me in the day of my distress, and was with me in the way which I went.

The Altar in the Bible served many different purposes throughout the years to many different people; such as:

  • Noah
  • Abraham
  • Jacob
  • Aaron
  • Joshua
  • Samual
  • Saul
  • David;
  • Nearly every old testament saint had an altar in their life.

The Altar Served Many different purposes as well.

An altar to God to please Him

Genesis 8:20 And Noah builded an altar unto the LORD; and took of every clean beast, and of every clean fowl, and offered burnt offerings on the altar.

21 And the LORD smelled a sweet savour; and the LORD said in his heart, I will not again curse the ground any more for man’s sake; for the imagination of man’s heart is evil from his youth; neither will I again smite any more every thing living, as I have done.

An Altar to God to mark an important event (remembrance)

Genesis 12:7 And the LORD appeared unto Abram, and said, Unto thy seed will I give this land: and there builded he an altar unto the LORD, who appeared unto him.

An Altar to fulfil God’s command

Exodus 20:24 An altar of earth thou shalt make unto me, and shalt sacrifice thereon thy burnt offerings, and thy peace offerings, thy sheep, and thine oxen: in all places where I record my name I will come unto thee, and I will bless thee.

An Altar of forgiveness

Matthew 5:22 But I say unto you, That whosoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment: and whosoever shall say to his brother, Raca, shall be in danger of the council: but whosoever shall say, Thou fool, shall be in danger of hell fire.
23 Therefore if thou bring thy gift to the altar, and there rememberest that thy brother hath ought against thee;
24 Leave there thy gift before the altar, and go thy way; first be reconciled to thy brother, and then come and offer thy gift.

The Alter can be polluted

Malachi 1:7 Ye offer polluted bread upon mine altar; and ye say, Wherein have we polluted thee? In that ye say, The table of the LORD is contemptible.

What are you bringing to God? When you go to the Altar are you making promises you don’t keep? Are you just going through the motions to seem more spiritual? The Altar is a place where God simply asks that you be as serious about is as He is.

The Altar of God throughout the Bible has been used to signify events, bring about remembrance and to please God.  It served a fundamental purpose in the Old Testament as a place of worship, sacrifice and understanding.

In today’s church we keep that tradition moving by having an old fashioned altar. A place where you can come and spend time with God. It can break barriers of humility and shows God that you are serious about doing God’s will as Abraham was when God ask him to sacrifice his son. It can be that point that takes you to that next level of being a better Christian. It can also mark a milestone or event in your life (place of remembrance)

One degree away.

212 degrees is when water goes from just water… to boiling. Oft times we are going through the motions, we hear the Alter call every service and we don’t take advantage because “we don’t need to or I want to leave or I’ll just do it later… We really feel that we are “on fire for God” doing those things WE feel would be pleasing to God. But are we doing those things we KNOW He would be pleased with. We operate so close to the mark, perhaps at times getting to 211 degrees! But never boiling over for God.

God desires us to spend time with Him, read His word, pray and go to church… What we leave on the table is what will define us in our Walk with God. The Altar is that place that can take you one more degree, that one step away, sold out, nothing left. When we add to those things a heart to serve we can truly boil over in our faith… and truly experience God’s blessing…

End By Singing “Is Your All On The Altar”

I recall my 2nd suicide and following interviews.  A woman in her late 40’s who was dealing with relational problems.  Many of her neighbors knew she was having trouble, people she went to church with, even her Pastor.  She had medication throughout her house and the countertop looked like a pharmacy. She had a Bible in every room. Yet despite all of those who knew she was having trouble; all the cries for help she made: she felt that taking her own life was the only option.

I spoke with NO LESS than 10 people who had the ability to help, but all said the same thing: I had no time or it wasn’t my problem. Now you would think it odd for a Fireman to look at a burning home and not seek to Recue those inside. Right? Yet everyday Christians allow people to die without Christ when we had the ability to save them.

Colossians 4:6  Let your speech be alway with grace, seasoned with salt, that ye may know how ye ought to answer every man.

We Have The Answer

But; what is the question?

Acts 16:30 And brought them out, and said, Sirs, what must I do to be saved?
31 And they said, Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house.
32 And they spake unto him the word of the Lord, and to all that were in his house.

  • Before you can answer that question you must answer it for yourself…
  • If the answer is YES then ask — “ Am I qualified”
  • First look to yourself, if you are saved, you are qualified.
  • But it shouldn’t stop there. For a Public safety Officer it takes years of training and participation. He know when others lives are at stake that it’s no longer a hobby, but a very way of life!

How am I to give the answer?

Ecclesiastes 10:12  The words of a wise man’s mouth are gracious; but the lips of a fool will swallow up himself.

Remember the first part of our verse:

Let your speech be alway with grace.

Are you telling them about Jesus? Are trying to convince them?

Ephesians 4:15 But speaking the truth in love, may grow up into him in all things, which is the head, even Christ

Titus 1:9 Holding fast the faithful word as he hath been taught, that he may be able by sound doctrine both to exhort and to convince the gainsayers.

Titus is listing the qualifications of a Pastor… There are some in whom God will use the Pastor to reach… But without your bringing them in, they may never get the chance!

A paramedic is a life saver; but, there are some injuries he can’t deal with… he has to bring them to the hospital so that one more qualified can help.

So How can I prepare to be a Rescuer?

1 Peter 3:15  But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear:

You get ready to answer by:

  • Fellowship
  • Reading your Bible
  • Coming to Church
  • Understanding what you believe

Even a trained responder has to take basic first aide every year..  It’s good to keep fresh on the Basics.     B.I.B.L.E.

Important to note: Testimony and Holiness are very important.

1 Corinthians 9:13  Do ye not know that they which minister about holy things live of the things of the temple? and they which wait at the alter are partakers with the alter?

14 Even so hath the Lord ordained that they which preach the gospel should live of the gospel.

We must strive as Christians to be HOLY… otherwise…

What you speak are just words

What kind of testimony would it be for a policeman/fireman to walk by an emergency without helping?

Tonight we must become rescuers, not to see limitations but to see limitless possibilities.

The song Rescue the Perishing was written by Fanny Crosby. She was born on March 24, 1820 and shortly after she got an eye infection that led to her blindness. Not letting that become her limitation she is credited with writing upwards of 8,000 Gospel hymns/songs. Often under up to 200 different names because publishers didn’t want to have song books of “just” Fanny Crosby songs. She was a school teacher and had meetings with nearly every president that served during her lifetime.  Her desire was to share the gospel despite her handicap.

How many are we going to let die, without giving them “first aide”

 1 Corinthians 15:3 For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures;

4 And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:

Sing – Rescue the Perishing

Tonight will you be a First responder and prepare to give life through Jesus Christ?

1 Corinthians 15:3 For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures;
4 And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:

According to the Scriptures – 865

1 John 5:13 These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God.

John 20:31 But these are written, that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing ye might have life through his name.

He Lived – 805

Hebrews 4:15 For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin.

He Died – 132

Matthew 27:22 Pilate saith unto them, What shall I do then with Jesus which is called Christ? They all say unto him, Let him be crucified.
23 And the governor said, Why, what evil hath he done? But they cried out the more, saying, Let him be crucified.
24 When Pilate saw that he could prevail nothing, but that rather a tumult was made, he took water, and washed his hands before the multitude, saying, I am innocent of the blood of this just person: see ye to it.
25 Then answered all the people, and said, His blood be on us, and on our children.
26 Then released he Barabbas unto them: and when he had scourged Jesus, he delivered him to be crucified.

33 And when they were come unto a place called Golgotha, that is to say, a place of a skull,

50 Jesus, when he had cried again with a loud voice, yielded up the ghost.
51 And, behold, the veil of the temple was rent in twain from the top to the bottom; and the earth did quake, and the rocks rent;
52 And the graves were opened; and many bodies of the saints which slept arose,
53 And came out of the graves after his resurrection, and went into the holy city, and appeared unto many.
54 Now when the centurion, and they that were with him, watching Jesus, saw the earthquake, and those things that were done, they feared greatly, saying, Truly this was the Son of God.

He Rose Again – 176

Luke 24:1 Now upon the first day of the week, very early in the morning, they came unto the sepulchre, bringing the spices which they had prepared, and certain others with them.
2 And they found the stone rolled away from the sepulchre.
3 And they entered in, and found not the body of the Lord Jesus.
4 And it came to pass, as they were much perplexed thereabout, behold, two men stood by them in shining garments:

5 And as they were afraid, and bowed down their faces to the earth, they said unto them, Why seek ye the living among the dead?
6 He is not here, but is risen: remember how he spake unto you when he was yet in Galilee,
7 Saying, The Son of man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, and be crucified, and the third day rise again.
8 And they remembered his words,

Acts 1:3 To whom also he shewed himself alive after his passion by many infallible proofs, being seen of them forty days, and speaking of the things pertaining to the kingdom of God:

John 2:22 When therefore he was risen from the dead, his disciples remembered that he had said this unto them; and they believed the scripture, and the word which Jesus had said.

He is coming Again – 194

1 Thessalonians 4:14 For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so them also which sleep in Jesus will God bring with him.
15 For this we say unto you by the word of the Lord, that we which are alive and remain unto the coming of the Lord shall not prevent them which are asleep.
16 For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first:
17 Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord.
18 Wherefore comfort one another with these words.

What a day that will be – 840

Out text comes from an account where Paul was to sail on a ship to be delivered as a prisoner.

Acts 27:1 And when it was determined that we should sail into Italy, they delivered Paul and certain other prisoners unto one named Julius, a centurion of Augustus’ band.

And entering into a ship of Adramyttium, ( Adra-mitum) we launched, meaning to sail by the coasts of Asia; one Aristarchus, ( Arista-archus) a Macedonian of Thessalonica, being with us.

3   And the next day we touched at Sidon. ( S-i-don) And Julius courteously entreated Paul, and gave him liberty to go unto his friends to refresh himself.

4   And when we had launched from thence, we sailed under Cyprus, because the winds were contrary.

5   And when we had sailed over the sea of Cilicia ( Sil-is-ia) and Pamphylia, ( Pam-fi-lia ) we came to Myra, ( Mira )a city of Lycia. ( Li-cia )

6   And there the centurion found a ship of Alexandria sailing into Italy; and he put us therein.

7   And when we had sailed slowly many days, and scarce were come over against Cnidus, ( Sni-dus ) the wind not suffering us, we sailed under Crete, over against Salmone;

8   And, hardly passing it, came unto a place which is called The fair havens; nigh whereunto was the city of Lasea.

9   Now when much time was spent, and when sailing was now dangerous, because the fast was now already past, Paul admonished them,

10 And said unto them, Sirs, I perceive that this voyage will be with hurt and much damage, not only of the lading and ship, but also of our lives.

11 Nevertheless the centurion believed the master and the owner of the ship, more than those things which were spoken by Paul.

12 And because the haven was not commodious to winter in, the more part advised to depart thence also, if by any means they might attain to Phenice, and there to winter; which is an haven of Crete, and lieth toward the south west and north west.

13 And when the south wind blew softly, supposing that they had obtained their purpose, loosing thence, they sailed close by Crete.

14 But not long after there arose against it a tempestuous wind, called Euroclydon.

15 And when the ship was caught, and could not bear up into the wind, we let her drive.

16 And running under a certain island which is called Clauda, we had much work to come by the boat:

17 Which when they had taken up, they used helps, undergirding the ship; and, fearing lest they should fall into the quicksands, strake sail, and so were driven.

18 And we being exceedingly tossed with a tempest, the next day they lightened the ship;

19 And the third day we cast out with our own hands the tackling of the ship.

20 And when neither sun nor stars in many days appeared, and no small tempest lay on us, all hope that we should be saved was then taken away.

21 But after long abstinence Paul stood forth in the midst of them, and said, Sirs, ye should have hearkened unto me, and not have loosed from Crete, and to have gained this harm and loss.

22 And now I exhort you to be of good cheer: for there shall be no loss of any man’s life among you, but of the ship.

Winds can change the direction you go

James 3:3 Behold, we put bits in the horses’ mouths, that they may obey us; and we turn about their whole body.

4 Behold also the ships, which though they be so great, and are driven of fierce winds, yet are they turned about with a very small helm, whithersoever the governor listeth.

5 Even so the tongue is a little member, and boasteth great things. Behold, how great a matter a little fire kindleth!

Winds can be like words. Helpful, harmful, gentle or dangerous… Both can change your direction. Let’s come back to that…

Paul warned those on the ship what was to happen.

Acts 27:9 Now when much time was spent, and when sailing was now dangerous, because the fast was now already past, Paul admonished them,

10 And said unto them, Sirs, I perceive that this voyage will be with hurt and much damage, not only of the lading and ship, but also of our lives.

You should listen to the man of God!

  1. Paul saw the winds that were contrary may become a storm
  2. Oft times the man of God needs to tell you something; advise, give comfort, even to chastise or correct.  That is what he is there for.

The Centurion listened to the voice of the world rather than the man of God.

Acts 27:11 Nevertheless the centurion believed the master and the owner of the ship, more than those things which were spoken by Paul.

There will be winds of change that come up in your life, decisions will need to be made. The man of God is there to help guide us through these winds, which is why part od a Pastor’s qualification is that he is “learned”. The centurion heard what Paul said, there was no mis-understanding; but he chose to listen to the world rather than the man of God.

I’ve always been the one to say that actions have consequences, good or bad; but the outcome is determined by what you do… first.

When things seem to get better, you start to doubt the warnings.

Acts 27:13  And when the south wind blew softly, supposing that they had obtained their purpose, loosing thence, they sailed close by Crete.

It’s so easy after you choose the worlds way to look back when the winds blow softly and say: “See! It’s not as bad as you said it would be!”

Ever heard of the calm before the storm?

What happens when the storms come and you haven’t listened to the man of God?

You do nothing.

Acts 27:15  And when the ship was caught, and could not bear up into the wind, we let her drive.

When you see that things are coming apart you try to patch them. You’ll try anything to try getting your ship to hold together. You’ll try plans, programs, even drugs and alcohol to try and hold things together.

Acts 27:16 And running under a certain island which is called Clauda, we had much work to come by the boat:

17 Which when they had taken up, they used helps, undergirding the ship; and, fearing lest they should fall into the quicksands, strake sail, and so were driven.

But you haven’t dealt with the storm.

When these patches do not work, you start to get rid of things that you feel are a burden.

Acts 27:18  And we being exceedingly tossed with a tempest, the next day they lightened the ship;

19 And the third day we cast out with our own hands the tackling of the ship.

  1. They got rid of the lading ( cargo ) that was to make them money.
  2. They got rid of their tools of the trade.

We look at our life and try and get rid of things.  Foolishly we get rid of the very things that help us live. We clean ourselves up and get rid of our sin.

But cleaning up and getting rid of sin in your life, does not deal with the storm.

All hope was lost.

Ac 27:20       And when neither sun nor stars in many days appeared, and no small tempest lay on us, all hope that we should be saved was then taken away.

Now God can deal with you.

  1. Oft times we do things differently because we are contrary to the wind. Something is said or done and we react to it.
  2. Remember winds are like words; they can be damaging or misleading.
  3. The man of God sees things on the horizon. It may be smooth sailing with a soft wind, or storms are coming.
  4. If you don’t believe the man of God and the storms come you try to handle it yourself.
  5. You may think that you can handle it.  But you can’t.
  6. First, you do nothing.
  7. Second, you see things are coming apart so you try and patch things up.
  8. Third, you start to get rid of things, try and clean yourself up.
  9. All these things do not address the main problem. Obedience to God. Either through what God is telling you, or through the man of God.
  10. You still didn’t address the storm.

The man of God waits.

Acts 27:21 But after long abstinence Paul stood forth in the midst of them, and said, Sirs, ye should have hearkened unto me, and not have loosed from Crete, and to have gained this harm and loss.

Paul was not in the mist of the panic. He knew eventually a point would come when doing it their way would not be enough.

Your life will be saved, but not the ship.

Acts 27:22       And now I exhort you to be of good cheer: for there shall be no loss of any man’s life among you, but of the ship.

  1. When the storms came you went to the world. Your ship is strong, the winds are soft, and the ship will take care of you.
  2. The man of God says that God will take care of you even after you did not listen. But not the ship.
  3. Not that thing that kept you from listening to the man of God, not that thing that kept you from serving Him, not that thing that took you out of church when you were contrary to the wind.

Conclusion:

A word, good or bad, like the wind can change our direction. Our reaction must stay on course. The man of God saw that these winds were going to turn into a storm, but we listened to the world tell us just how good we were, that we could handle anything that comes our way and set sail for destruction.  When the storms came we tried everything we knew to keep our lives from coming apart, only in the end to loose all hope. The man of God was always there, in the shadows, waiting to help. And with re-assurance, through the storm, he was there to help when we were ready. You see the storm lasts through the rest of the chapter. The man of God does not fix the storm, but protects you through it. But not the ship. That thing that you put your faith in would not make it through the storm.

So next time you get a little contrary to the wind and the man of God warns you of the coming storm. Stay home for the holiday. Winter the storm in a fair haven, protected by the man of God.

Romans 11:25a For I would not, brethren, that ye should be ignorant of this mystery, lest ye should be wise in your own conceits;

We have a mystery to solve tonight…

We are going to look at what has been identified as a mystery and the conclusions of the matter.

1. Mystery of the Church

Romans 11:25b that blindness in part is happened to Israel, until the fulness of the Gentiles be come in.

2. Mystery of the Gospel

Romans 16:25-26 Now to him that is of power to stablish you according to my gospel, and the preaching of Jesus Christ, according to the revelation of the mystery, which was kept secret since the world began, But now is made manifest, and by the scriptures of the prophets, according to the commandment of the everlasting God, made known to all nations for the obedience of faith:

3. Mystery of Wisdom

1 Corinthians 2:7 But we speak the wisdom of God in a mystery, even the hidden wisdom, which God ordained before the world unto our glory:
[8] Which none of the princes of this world knew: for had they known it, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory.

4. Mystery of conscience

5. Mystery of Godliness

Ephesians 6:19-20 And for me, that utterance may be given unto me, that I may open my mouth boldly, to make known the mystery of the gospel,For which I am an ambassador in bonds: that therein I may speak boldly, as I ought to speak.

6. Mystery of God’s will

Ephesians 1:9 Having made known unto us the mystery of his will, according to his good pleasure which he hath purposed in himself:

7. Mystery of the relationship God has with His church

Ephesians 5:32 This is a great mystery: but I speak concerning Christ and the church.

8. Mystery of the Rapture

1 Corinthians 15:51-52 Behold, I shew you a mystery; We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed, In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed.

7. Mystery of the Revelation

8. Mystery of the Kingdom of God

Jeremiah 3:15 And I will give you pastors according to mine heart, which shall feed you with knowledge and understanding.

Throughout history God has used different people in different roles to do His service. Some of these are known as Priests, Prophets, Kings, Judges, Apostles, Evangelists, Teachers, Pastors, Elders, Bishops and Deacons.
With this being Pastor Appreciation Month we are going to focus on the role of a Pastor.
Early in Bible history the term Pastor was used 2 fold.
  1. As someone who worked within the fields with the sheep.. To care for them.
  2. As a Spiritual leader of the flock.. Within the area of spiritual guidance.
The basic difference in the old testament between a priest and pastor was that a pastor was to work amongst the people to provide spiritual guidance; where a priest had a more stationary role working with the sacrifices within the tabernacle/temple.
One was the strict letter of the law while the other was the spiritual application of it.
Oft times the name Pastor in the scriptures has more of a negative presence than good…

Jeremiah 10:21 For the pastors are become brutish, and have not sought the LORD: therefore they shall not prosper, and all their flocks shall be scattered.

Why this is important is that when looking closely at the New Testament we see very specific guidelines on how to choose a Pastor and our roles as “the sheep”.. Knowing examples that there are good AND Bad Pastors out there.
The Modern Baptist Religion has combined the roles of Pastor, Bishop and Elder. As Christ is our High Priest there is no New Testament role for a Priest.

Ephesians 4:11 And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers;
12 For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ:
13 Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ:
14 That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive;
15 But speaking the truth in love, may grow up into him in all things, which is the head, even Christ:

1 Timothy 3:1 This is a true saying, If a man desire the office of a bishop, he desireth a good work.
2 A bishop then must be blameless, the husband of one wife, vigilant, sober, of good behaviour, given to hospitality, apt to teach;
3 Not given to wine, no striker, not greedy of filthy lucre; but patient, not a brawler, not covetous;
4 One that ruleth well his own house, having his children in subjection with all gravity;
5 (For if a man know not how to rule his own house, how shall he take care of the church of God?)
6 Not a novice, lest being lifted up with pride he fall into the condemnation of the devil.
7 Moreover he must have a good report of them which are without; lest he fall into reproach and the snare of the devil.

Titus 1:5 For this cause left I thee in Crete, that thou shouldest set in order the things that are wanting, and ordain elders in every city, as I had appointed thee:
6 If any be blameless, the husband of one wife, having faithful children not accused of riot or unruly.
7 For a bishop must be blameless, as the steward of God; not selfwilled, not soon angry, not given to wine, no striker, not given to filthy lucre;
8 But a lover of hospitality, a lover of good men, sober, just, holy, temperate;
9 Holding fast the faithful word as he hath been taught, that he may be able by sound doctrine both to exhort and to convince the gainsayers.

1 Peter 5:1 The elders which are among you I exhort, who am also an elder, and a witness of the sufferings of Christ, and also a partaker of the glory that shall be revealed:
2 Feed the flock of God which is among you, taking the oversight thereof, not by constraint, but willingly; not for filthy lucre, but of a ready mind;
3 Neither as being lords over God’s heritage, but being ensamples to the flock.
4 And when the chief Shepherd shall appear, ye shall receive a crown of glory that fadeth not away.
5 Likewise, ye younger, submit yourselves unto the elder. Yea, all of you be subject one to another, and be clothed with humility: for God resisteth the proud, and giveth grace to the humble.

Mark 6:34-44 And Jesus, when he came out, saw much people, and was moved with compassion toward them, because they were as sheep not having a shepherd: and he began to teach them many things. And when the day was now far spent, his disciples came unto him, and said, This is a desert place, and now the time is far passed: Send them away, that they may go into the country round about, and into the villages, and buy themselves bread: for they have nothing to eat. He answered and said unto them, Give ye them to eat. And they say unto him, Shall we go and buy two hundred pennyworth of bread, and give them to eat? He saith unto them, How many loaves have ye? go and see. And when they knew, they say, Five, and two fishes. And he commanded them to make all sit down by companies upon the green grass. And they sat down in ranks, by hundreds, and by fifties. And when he had taken the five loaves and the two fishes, he looked up to heaven, and blessed, and brake the loaves, and gave them to his disciples to set before them; and the two fishes divided he among them all. And they did all eat, and were filled. And they took up twelve baskets full of the fragments, and of the fishes. And they that did eat of the loaves were about five thousand men.

Mark 6:45-50 And straightway he constrained his disciples to get into the ship, and to go to the other side before unto Bethsaida, while he sent away the people. And when he had sent them away, he departed into a mountain to pray. And when even was come, the ship was in the midst of the sea, and he alone on the land. And he saw them toiling in rowing; for the wind was contrary unto them: and about the fourth watch of the night he cometh unto them, walking upon the sea, and would have passed by them. But when they saw him walking upon the sea, they supposed it had been a spirit, and cried out: For they all saw him, and were troubled. And immediately he talked with them, and saith unto them, Be of good cheer: it is I; be not afraid.

(see also Matthew 14:22-27)

1.Set the Scene

  • Jesus had just finished feeding the 5,000.
  • The Apostles worked with Jesus the whole day in the desert.
  • When Jesus gets finished he tells his disciples to get into the ship and head out… He would send away the multitudes.
  • About half way across the wind started to blow hard… the waves began to toss the ship. (Professional Sailors)

2. The Storm (vs. 48)

  • Note the storm was unexpected.
  • The disciples were in the will of God (expound)
  • Sometimes you may be in a storm because of someone else’s sin or disobedience (Jonah)
  • Sometimes you may be in a storm just because… it’s LIFE!
  • Nowhere does it say that Jesus sent the storm… There are times that the storms are simply storms…. It’s how you deal with the storm that important…
  • Don’t think yourself so spiritual that every little form of trouble in your life is God testing you… get over the fact you are in the storm and just SERVE GOD.

3. They kept rowing (gotta give ‘em a little credit)

  • vs. 48 – What do your do when the storms of life come… Keep Rowing! Jesus directed the disciples to go to the other side… that’s where they were gonna go!
  • Some are not spiritually grounded enough to know between a storm and breeze.
  • I’m sure some of the disciples were thinking about what happened to them in the last storm… Matthew 8 and Mark 4… (Expound)
  • At least they woke Jesus up! When I’m in trouble I want HELP!

4. Jesus was watching (vs. 48)

  • In both instances Jesus was there… (Matthew 8) He was sleeping in the boat (Mark 6) watching from the mountain. But in both he was available for those who would cry out… vs. 49.
  • Vs 48… would have passed them by…

Romans 10:13 For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.

5. Bad thing sometimes happen to good people…

  • Daniel goes to the Lions den…
  • 3 Hebrew Children get thrown in the fiery furnace…
  • The Apostle Paul was shipwrecked, beaten and stoned…
  • The Apostles in the storm…

Jesus was led as the lamb to the slaughter…

(dramatic)

John 12:27  Now is my soul troubled; and what shall I say? Father, save me from this hour: but for this cause came I unto this hour.

  • What had Jesus done? What was His storm? Why was He going to suffer?
  • Because He was about to take on my sin and the sin of the world……
  • and He didn’t deserve it…

6.  For one who won’t seek help…Sometimes the storm seems like it will never end…

2 Peter 1:9 But he that lacketh these things is blind, and cannot see afar off, and hath forgotten that he was purged from his old sins.

It doesn’t matter why or how you got in the storm.  Remember: the Apostles were in the will of God… What matters is what you do when you are in the storm.

So What Do You Do When The Storms of Life Come?

  1. Don’t stop rowing
  2. Don’t over analyze the problem or just sit there in self pity thinking you deserve the storm …… just look toward the solution….JESUS
  3. Cry Out! Don’t let Jesus just pass by…. Get His attention…. When you pray don’t pray like the heathen do… using big words….. CRY OUT– JESUS! I NEED SOME HELP!!!
Never forget that the shoreline is soon coming….

After Jesus calmed the storm they sailed to the shoreline… the next day the sun came out, the sky was clear, and they could look back at the storm and remember what Jesus brought them through… Jesus may not always bring the storms in your life… but He sure can help you get the victory over them when you ask Him to….

Maybe today you don’t know the saviour of the storm…

I invite you to come and learn of Jesus.

We live in a time where there is so much going on that it gets so hard to hear that “still small voice…” Events in our life come and go, never taking the time to determine if God was trying to get our attention.

Exodus 3:1-5  Now Moses kept the flock of Jethro his father in law, the priest of Midian: and he led the flock to the backside of the desert, and came to the mountain of God, even to Horeb. And the angel of the LORD appeared unto him in a flame of fire out of the midst of a bush: and he looked, and, behold, the bush burned with fire, and the bush was not consumed. And Moses said, I will now turn aside, and see this great sight, why the bush is not burnt. And when the LORD saw that he turned aside to see, God called unto him out of the midst of the bush, and said, Moses, Moses. And he said, Here am I. And he said, Draw not nigh hither: put off thy shoes from off thy feet, for the place whereon thou standest is holy ground.

1.The Circumstances

Exodus 3:1  Now Moses kept the flock of Jethro his father in law, the priest of Midian: and he led the flock to the backside of the desert, and came to the mountain of God, even to Horeb.

  • Does Life sometimes find you on the backside of the desert?
  • Take a little walk through Moses History in Acts 7 you’ll find a man who has fallen from greatness.

2. The Event

Exodus 3:2  And the angel of the LORD appeared unto him in a flame of fire out of the midst of a bush: and he looked, and, behold, the bush burned with fire, and the bush was not consumed.

  • If God wants to give us a message, He first must get our attention.
  • Looking at these passages we find that the burning bush was NOT the message from God, but just the event that He used to get Moses attention.
  • If we look at events in our life we will find 2 types:
      1. Spiritual – This is an event that we see and consider internally with no action. (emotion) Lamentations     3:51 “Mine eye hath affecteth mine heart”
      2. Physical – This is a outward expression of an internal change. (a re-action)
  • The Angel appearing out of the flame of the bush was meant to effect Moses spiritually. He  then could make a descision to turn to see (action), or continue on (with no action)
  • By that same token God may use events in our life spiritually to see if it would produce an Physical action.

      1. Car Accident

      2. Death in the Family
      3. A message from the pulpit
      4. A word from a friend.

3. The Action

Exodus 3:3  And Moses said, I will now turn aside, and see this great sight, why the bush is not burnt.

  • Notice “I” will now turn aside.  Moses action was personal and immediate.
  • Moses acted (physical) to a spiritual (internal) change of an event that God placed in his path.
  • He could have said “ wasn’t that odd” He could have sent someone else to go see what it was.
INTERESTING NOTE: This action took some effort… he had to climb a mountain to get there to receive the message. How often do we turn to see the event that God has prepared only not to receive the message because it took too much work to get it.

4. God’s Re-action

Exodus 3:4   And when the LORD saw that he turned aside to see, God called unto him out of the midst of the bush, and said, Moses, Moses. And he said, Here am I.

  • Only AFTER God saw Moses turn to find the truth of the event did God speak to him.
  • When God called, He called PERSONALLY. “Moses, Moses.”
  • When God called, He called IMMEDIATELY.
  • We find Moses humbled before God and ready to receive the message. “Here am I.”

5. The Result

Exodus 3:5   And he said, Draw not nigh hither: put off thy shoes from off thy feet, for the place whereon thou standest is holy ground.

  • Now Moses gets the Message “ We know the rest of the story”
  • What about us?

6. Conclusion

  • God uses events in our life to get our attention. (Note: I didn’t say causes events)
  • How we spiritually discern these events will either produce only an emotion, or and emotion that leads to an action.
  • Our response to the event must be personal and immediate.
  • Once we turn to get the message, we must go the distance, there may be a mountain to climb.
  • When we have committed to the task we will find God’s response personal and immediate.
  • The Goal? Holy Ground.
  • God’s message will be received humbly, then we can say, “Here am I.”
