Lessons Found in The Storm Part 2

Accounts combined from Mark 6 and Matthew 14

Mark 6:45 And straightway he constrained his disciples to get into the ship, and to go to the other side before unto Bethsaida, while he sent away the people.
46 And when he had sent them away, he departed into a mountain to pray.
47 And when even was come, the ship was in the midst of the sea, and he alone on the land.

23 And when he had sent the multitudes away, he went up into a mountain apart to pray: and when the evening was come, he was there alone.
48 And he saw them toiling in rowing; for the wind was contrary unto them: and about the fourth watch of the night he cometh unto them, walking upon the sea, and would have passed by them.
49 But when they saw him walking upon the sea, they supposed it had been a spirit, and cried out:

26 And when the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were troubled, saying, It is a spirit; and they cried out for fear.
50 For they all saw him, and were troubled. And immediately he talked with them, and saith unto them, Be of good cheer: it is I; be not afraid.

28 And Peter answered him and said, Lord, if it be thou, bid me come unto thee on the water.
29 And he said, Come. And when Peter was come down out of the ship, he walked on the water, to go to Jesus.
30 But when he saw the wind boisterous, he was afraid; and beginning to sink, he cried, saying, Lord, save me.
31 And immediately Jesus stretched forth his hand, and caught him, and said unto him, O thou of little faith, wherefore didst thou doubt?
32 And when they were come into the ship, the wind ceased.

33 Then they that were in the ship came and worshipped him, saying, Of a truth thou art the Son of God.
51 And he went up unto them into the ship; and the wind ceased: and they were sore amazed in themselves beyond measure, and wondered.
52 For they considered not the miracle of the loaves: for their heart was hardened.
53 And when they had passed over, they came into the land of Gennesaret, and drew to the shore.
54 And when they were come out of the ship, straightway they knew him,

35 And when the men of that place had knowledge of him, they sent out into all that country round about, and brought unto him all that were diseased;

1.Set the Scene

a. Jesus had just finished feeding the 5,000.

b. The Apostles worked with Jesus the whole day in the desert.

c. When Jesus gets finished he tells his disciples to get into the ship and head out… He would send away the multitudes.

d. About half way across the wind started to blow hard… the waves began to toss the ship.

2. Jesus Responded to their distress

Mark 6:48 And he saw them toiling in rowing; for the wind was contrary unto them: and about the fourth watch of the night he cometh unto them, walking upon the sea, and would have passed by them.

3. They kept rowing (gotta give ‘em a little credit)

a. What do your do when the wind blows against you?… Keep Rowing! Jesus directed the disciples to go to the other side… that’s where they were gonna go!

NOTE: The Disciples were in the perfect will of God… Sometimes a storm… is just a storm

b. I’m sure some of the disciples were thinking about what happened to them in the last storm… Matthew 8 and Mark 4… (Expound)

4.  It does not say they feared the storm, as last time, …

Their fear was that Jesus was walking on water!

a. Ever feared what you did not understand?

b. Jesus mission for his disciples was to teach them about faith.

c. The Jews require a sign, they do not believe that which they cannot touch, see, feel… Jesus needed them to see past their fear.. and have faith..

5.  Jesus was there.

In both instances Jesus was there.. Whether He was sleeping on the ship or watching from the mountainside… Jesus was available for those who would need Him and Cry out for Him.

6. Peter steps out on Faith

Matthew 14:28 And Peter answered him and said, Lord, if it be thou, bid me come unto thee on the water.

When Peter began to focus on the storm rather than on Jesus he began to sink.

7. When THEY entered the ship

Matthew 14:32 And when they were come into the ship, the wind ceased.

Want the storms in your life to cease? Take Jesus with you.

8. Never forget what God has done for you.. It will keep you from seeing what God is doing for you.

Mark 6:52 For they considered not the miracle of the loaves: for their heart was hardened.

WRAP IT UP:

Faith is looking past the storm… knowing the shore is soon coming. Later that morning they came to the shore, the sun was shining and no storm in sight..

How do deal the storm.

  • Know a storm sometimes is just a storm.
  • Keep rowing and stop sitting there getting wet.
  • Take Jesus with you want to have peace from the storm.
